Off-grid photovoltaic installations are those that are not connected to the grid and use the energy generated for self-consumption. These installations are ideally suited to isolated locations where electric energy is required and access to the grid is difficult, thus becoming a more economically viable alternative than a generator powered using diesel fuel, in addition to being a more ecological and environmentally-friendly solution. In order to understand the importance of these installations it is worth taking into account that approximately one quarter of the world's population does not have access to electric energy.
Off-grid photovoltaic installations are sized in accordance with their estimated consumption. Amongst their most frequent applications the following are worth highlighting: public lighting, water pumping, automatic irrigation, electrification of homes or facilities, vehicles such as caravans, boats and meteorological stations or communication repeaters.
